Honda Refreshes the Civic Type R for 2027 and Here’s What’s New
October 16 2026,
The Civic Type R has a reputation for being the hot hatch that asks you to work for your fun. The 2027 refresh keeps that deal intact and fixes the small complaints. For Quebec performance-car shoppers weighing a fall purchase, that makes it worth a close look.
Honda is marking 30 years of Type R globally and 10 years in North America with this update. It is also the only car in its class offered exclusively with a manual transmission.
The Biggest Changes for 2027
The headline change is up front. A redesigned fascia brings a deeper front splitter and a larger grille opening. Honda says the airflow now has less turbulence, which raises engine cooling and helps the car sustain performance during demanding track driving. If you plan to use the car hard, this is the update that matters most.
The engine cover has a new design as well, styled after the engines in early Type R models sold in Japan. Brake feel also improves. A yoke spring on the brake pedal suppresses play in the pedal link, so the pedal feels more direct.
Inside, the front sport seats are heated for the first time, with three-level controls placed beside the knurled climate knobs. The red high-friction suede-like upholstery gets a new perforation design with black striping. The material reduces body slippage in high-G driving and breathes in high-contact areas to help reduce driver fatigue.
The dash gets a lift too:
- Ultrasuede on the upper instrument panel and front door panels, which reduces glare and reflections on the windshield
- A diamond-pattern mesh trim panel with a black surround
- Darker grey finishes on the aluminum shift knob, door handles and console trim
- Black climate control and air vent knobs, plus silver front door panel trim
Technology takes a step forward. Google built-in arrives for the first time, with Google Gemini, Google Maps and Google Play. Gemini keeps context across several exchanges, so you can speak to the car and keep your hands on the wheel. Alexa built-in is also standard.
Two USB-C ports now sit in the centre console above the wireless phone charger. The horn is improved too, with a dual tone.
Safety Gets One Addition
Post-Collision Braking joins the car for the first time and is fitted to every 2027 Civic Type R. It helps mitigate damage from multi-crash collisions.
The standard Honda Sensing suite covers four jobs:
- Collision prevention: Collision Mitigation Braking System and Forward Collision Warning
- Lane support: Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning
- Awareness: Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Monitor, Driver Attention Monitor and Traffic Sign Recognition
- Convenience: Adaptive Cruise Control and Auto High-Beam Headlights
What Stays the Same
The driving hardware is unchanged, and that is good news. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0 L four-cylinder making 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It drives the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission, and the body is still a hatchback.
The fuel economy ratings are 10.8 L/100 km city, 8.3 L/100 km highway and 9.7 L/100 km combined.
The chassis recipe also stays put. That means a dual-axis strut front suspension, a multilink rear and 19-inch wheels. The wheelbase is 2,735 mm. The refresh is about cooling, feel and cabin comfort, not about rewriting how the car drives.
There is still one Type R configuration, so you do not have to work through a trim ladder. Your choices are the colour and the transmission you have already chosen: manual.
What the Changes Mean for You
If you drive hard, the cooling work is the change that earns its place. Better airflow supports sustained output on a track day, which is when a hot car matters most. The yoke spring is a smaller change, but a firmer, more direct brake pedal is something you feel every time you drive.
If you drive the car year-round, heated seats are the practical gain. Quebec mornings get cold, and the Type R now has seat heat to match its race-style seats. The Ultrasuede dash also cuts windshield glare, which helps in low autumn sun.
If you use the car daily, the tech update matters. Gemini voice control, Alexa, two USB-C ports and a wireless charger make the cabin easier to live with. Post-Collision Braking and the full Honda Sensing suite round out a car that now looks after you as well as it entertains you.
Three colours are offered: the new Meteoroid Grey Metallic, Boost Blue and Championship White, the racing-heritage shade. The 2027 Civic Type R is planned to reach Honda dealerships later this fall.
Is the 2027 Civic Type R Worth Your Time?
The 2027 Civic Type R keeps the 315 hp turbocharged engine and the manual gearbox, then improves cooling, brake feel, comfort, tech and safety. It is the most complete version of an enthusiast hatchback that stays true to its analog roots.
